“I could hear bones crunching, just like you read about,”

“I’ve been a hunter my whole life,” said Sommer, 57. “I have no grievance against the bear. He was just doing what bears do. But I would have shot him just the same.”

More info

"The attack on Sommers is reminiscent of the attack on Todd Orr that happened in the same area less than a year ago. In that bear spray failure, the bear also charged through a cloud of spray. Todd Orr also relied on bear spray instead of his pistol, and was unable to use the pistol while the bear was mauling him. Orr was alone when attacked.

Both Orr and Sommers yelled at the bear to “let them know they were there”. It was the wrong decision in both of their cases. Both bears attacked when they were yelled at. Both men sustained severe injuries to their head that required dozens of stitches. Both were fortunate to survive."

So next time ...

NEVER yell at The Bear.

Maybe sing to The Bear.
Or recite Elizabethan poetry?
Or chat about the weekly NCAA football rankings?

Maybe it depends on what the bear is doing before you yell. The bear might read it as an aggresive attempt to steal the dinner.
Bells might be much better. For a bow hunter the may even help to avoid the hassle with those game critters wink.

If you are going to use poetry, use the poetry of Paula Nancy Millstone Jennings of Sussex.

Spray is still safer and more effective than a pistol.
But nothing like 100% effective

I don't venture often into big bear territory but when I have my preference is bear spray plus a Mossberg 500 loaded with Brenneke K.O. or Black Magic slugs.
