Looking for a radio scanner app for Andriod; but one that doesn't give up too much of my privacy. ( the permissions are ridiculous) And that you use or like?

Municipalities seem to be moving to encryption of their comms because of these streaming apps. Scanning as a hobby, and as a useful source of information to the rabble, is on borrowed time.

My town went encrypted a few months ago.I can still monitor my county and my state agencies but I can't learn what's happening on my street anymore.

RadioReference, the premier hobby site, owned by the guy who enabled so much of the streaming app has now prohibited any discussion of the topic in the forums because so many of us are saying "we told you so."

I have Scanner Radio as well.. I don't think the permissions are too intrusive. It works very well, but I don't honestly use it very much these days.

In at least one state that I know of, it's illegal to have a scanner app on your phone if you are out and about. But it's OK for you to have the app if you're at home. I know, it doesn't make a whole lot of technological sense, but the idea behind the law is to make it illegal for criminals to listen to police communication while out committing a crime. So beware if you decide to install the app.

In practical terms, this is probably an extra charge they can slap on you if they get a probable cause to search your phone, but I am not a lawyer, as the famous internet adage says.

Now that I think about it, I confess my memory is a little shaky. For all you know, this may be outdated or incorrect information.

Keeping this as non-political as possible, would that be on the west coast?

It sounds like what I call a "cherry on top" charge where since you committed crime X, we're also going to charge you with Y. IIRC TN law has one like that where body armor isn't illegal but wearing it while committing another crime is.
