as Ive gotten older my skin has become very "papery"...daily 81mg aspirin therapy adds to an increase of minor scrapes that produce a lot of blood...in the past year I've whacked myself on a several props while shooting 3 gun or pistol matches, and found a useful addition to my range bag... taking a tip from USNERDOC's videos, I've added a couple of water bottle caps (a couple different brands ) and drilled a 3/32" hole in them... I carry a couple of bottles of water in my range bag... place the cap on a bottle and squeeze...makes for a good irrigation stream to wash off the injury site...

good idea. Any sort of clean water is good; use the spray top of a water bottle, bag with a corner clipped off, etc

Skin tears suck. A bunch of steri strips can keep it "together" until the undersurface re-epithelializes and then you can trim off the old/dead skin w/ some nail clippers.

Thanks for the cornstarch tip, Izzy. I never would have thought of that. I wonder if it'll cause future problems, like we've previously discussed about cray glue, black pepper, gun powder...

Hmmm, cornstarch. And cheaper than Quik Clots or Celox. Probably not a good idea for puncture wounds, though.

I've had a hard time sourcing sterile saline. Apparently it is a restricted substance available only by prescription in my state. The best I've been able to locate are 2oz squeeze bottles sold as sterile eye wash. I have one or two of these in my larger kits. But I like the bottle cap idea. In the winter it's likely that any liquids in my kit will freeze. Bottles of water are usually plentiful.

you can get sterile saline in 12 ounce bottles. it is sold for people who wear contact lenses.

walmart usually has it for $2-3 a bottle. comes with a cap that has a built in squirter.

I've been advised that the saline I use for contact lenses is perfectly good for washing out eyes or wounds. Its presence in my kits serves multiple purposes.

Corn startch has come across my path a few times inthe last few days. Enough to convince me to pack some. Clotting, talcum-like powder for the skin and tickener for soups and broths.... anything else?

My personal opinion is that the clean water in your water bottle is perfectly adeqate for irrigating wounds or eyes. I see no reason to bring anything special along.

But for those of us that wear contacts, a small bottle of saline solution is a must on an overnight trip.
