I'm taking my First Aid and CPR recertification this weekend and as I'm sharpening that skill, I thought it would be a perfect time to build an urban EDC kit. What do you put in yours?

I'll have my hiking kit and GHB in the car so don't need anymore more than what I'd need for a medical emergency or to get out of the building to my car in the event of a power failure, fire, etc. Since I'll be carrying a notebook snacks and a hot lunch, I want a pack, rather than my purse.

In a small daypack, I've added:
-hiking shoes
-travel mug for coffee
-ss water bottle (full)
-first aid kit and CPR mask
-heatsheet
-tylenol
-lip balm
-extra necker (Scouts bandana)
-buff
-3XAAA LED flashlight
-3 pens
-SAK (with military can opener + spoon in sheath)
-jet scream whistle
-mini bic
-hard case for glasses
-phone charger
*Added - spare batteries, small headlamp, full-sized screw driver, pocket kleenex pack, fem hygene stuff, 2 seasame snacks, small bag of trail mix and some jerky and my wallet

My normal on-person EDC includes:
-photon around my neck on parcord
-paracord bracelet
-watch
-prescription glasses
-sunglasses
-cel phone
-insulated boots *will swap for shoes in class
-winter jacket
-fleece jacket
-thinsulate hat and mitts
-merino wool socks
-leatherman wave (with mag solitare and fire steel in sheath)
-heatsheet
-LED flashlight
-bic
-lip balm
-keychain with fauxton, SAK, Fox 40, mini bic, monkey fist and 10 feet paracord
-I also carry my EDC-PSK purse with me everywhere, unless I'm carrying something bigger (I.e. my hiking kit)

I've become all about redundancy on the basics - in the city that emphasizes cash and flashlights - so I've got these items in winter coats, purses, wallet, etc. and I often have several of these things with me. Below is off the top of my head so it's a partial list. And it will vary somewhat by season.

Winter coats:

Cash
LED light (e-Pico and/or Petzl Zipka)
Bic lighter
Knife (Doug's little MK-5)
for dog walks after dark I also carry a Surefire or Fenix TK35
business cards (they burn and can be written on)
gallon plastic bags (used primarily for dog doo but multi-use)

House key Lanyard (paracord 550):

Pen (All-Weather Trekker Pen from BPTS)
e-Pico light
Whistle

Car key fob:

Firesteel wrapped in blaze orange duct tape & scraper
paracord thingamijig - blaze orange
whistle - blaze orange
mini pry bar - wrapped in blaze orange 550 paracord

Wallet

Doug's MK-5
Firesteel (miniature)

Dog walking shoulder bag

moleskine notebook (mini)
space pen refill
business cards
extra leash
gallon plastic "storage" bags
cash
pepper spray

Purse(s):

Petzl Zipka
Bic lighter
Stormproof matches
Kleenex packet
cash
cotton bandanna
my wallet's stuff
AM-FM radio

Rucksack (walks around the 'hood or on the Mall):

lots of the above stuff plus...
water
First-Aid
Titanium Evernew Sierra Cup (aka: dog's water bowl)
MoJo bars (2)
AMK Heatsheets
AM-FM radio

Daypack (hikes in the metro area - such as the C&O Canal):

Esbit stove and fuel tabs (during winter)
Tea bags (Earl Grey double bergamot + Liptons Cup o' Soup)
chemical hand warmers (during winter)
Becker Necker (wrapped in fluorescent green paracord 550)
AMK Heatsheets
Leatherman Micra
AM-FM radio

Bike Rack bag w/panniers and handlebar bag:

First-Aid
Becker Necker
water
lights
extra dog leash
PSK (Doug's)
AMK Heatsheets
(plus I always ride with rucksack or daypack)

Honda Element

Way too much to list. My dog (couple days food for her is packed) and I could comfortably camp for a weekend in it, at all times.

C) In my shirt pocket, Cigarettes, and Bic lighter.

D) In my front pants pockets: Cell phone charger, NukAlert, 2 semi-precious stones (for healing), and a pocket watch.

E) Right Pants Carpenters pocket: Cell phone, ink pen.

F) Left Pants Carpenters pocket: Sunglasses in a case.

On me when I'm out and about in the Houston area:
1. Doug Ritter keychain flashlight thing.
2. MiniBic lighter
3. REI miniwhistle (works great at homeschooling events to keep the kids in line)
4. Leatherman Squirt
5. Kel Tec PF-9 + spare magazine
6. County Comm peanut lighter
7. P-38 can opener
8. Cell phone (non-smart)
9. White hanky
10. Weather-appropriate clothing
11. Cash and credit cards

When I'm at work I have to leave the PF-9 at home but everything else is on me any time I step out the door.

Over the years I've cut way back on what I carry on my person. However, both our vehicles are ready for the apocalypse.

Thanks gang! Wildman, it's good to have you back!Dagny, I'm the same way with multiple redunancies and, Blast, I can relate to the survival vehicles and cutting back.

I figure if that if I'm only going to be a short walk from the vehicle, the house or the office, my main prep needs to be a medical emergency or getting back to one of those three bases. No need to carry it all if I'm only going to be an easy distance away. This isn't a commuter or wilderness pack. Getting stable and getting out (either to leave completely or resupply to go back in) are my top priorities. Like Dagny, I'll repack and reload as the situation dictates. The further I'm going to be from one of my three bases, the more I carry.

EDC is stuff I use daily and items that would be helpful in getting to my truck (and the larger kits therein).

In my pockets will be my wallet (ID, DL, CC, cash), key ring w/ DR Photon Freedom, cell-phone, locking folder, Mission wallet (w/ SAK Spartan, Leatherman E4, 1xAA LED, ID, emergency cash & spare truck key) and then there's my ...

EDC backpack, with (in no particular order) water, FAK, 4Sevens Quark AA (1xAA LED), spare AA & AAA batteries, Leatherman Charge XTi, whistle, wool socks, long sleeve wool tee-shirt, 20' 550 paracord, Garmin Foretrex 301, Bic lighter . . .

Thanks Russ!

Spare batteries and my wallet and cash. Almost forgot those! I'm going to forgo the clothes in this kit because I don't expect to be too far from my truck and I try to keep my coat, hat and mitts on my chair. I am going to take the hint from everyone and add a headlamp. In case of a fire, a headlamp will be more useful when crawling.

Izzy, I love your edc videos. I'm almost as addicted as you. I'm trying to wean myself a bit. :-) I keep telling myself that i just need to get to the truck.

On my person:
  • Folder (Benchmade Griptilian)
  • Key light
  • "Tactical" flashlight (LumaPower Trust 1). Perhaps the most useful item next to the knife. I escorted an attractive lady through the dark with my 350 lumens.
  • Meds in a pillbox
  • Magnifier
  • PicoPad. Really convenient and useful: basically a notepad + tiny pen, fits in your wallet: <http://www.everydayinnovations.com/catalog/PicoPad-18-1.html>. I have no affiliation with these guys.)
  • Cell phone, smart.
  • Extra battery for the cell phone.
  • Dental floss
  • Tissue paper
  • Bandaid
  • Duct tape
  • Safety pins

Defensive tools vary depending on the perceived need.

I usually don't go very far (within two miles of my home), so my main plan is to return to my car (where I have a much more extensive kit) or to get home. If for some reason I can't get to either, I still have my office to go to, where I have a stash. The chief threats in my area are floods and tornados. My office building is big and sturdy. I just happen to have the good (bad?) luck of having a corner office on the highest floor, which isn't good at all for tornadoes.

If I have a bag with me, I usually have more, including water, umbrella, sanitizer, etc.

Stuff that I used to carry, and should start again once I get the equipment replaced/fixed:
  • Altimeter/compass/chronograph/etc. watch. The battery ran out. Will have to get it replaced soon.
  • keychain compass and thermometer (broke off - the hole cannot be repaired)
  • USB key drive (broke off - the hole cannot be repaired)
  • A bar of chocolate. Nuff said.
