Story here.

Turns out many of the people injured by the tornado in Joplin have become infected with an extremely deadly fungus. Cleanup crews now have to be very careful so as not to get even a scratch while hauling debris.

I wonder if this fungus is in the Houston area? We're supposed to be at an elevated risk for hurricanes later this summer, it would really suck to have to deal with this fungus after being hit by a storm.

Does anyone know if any research institute or establishment was leveled during the Joplin Tornado which might have been working on genetically modified Zygomycota subtypes such as Rhizopus oryzae · Mucor indicus · Absidia corymbifera · Syncephalastrum racemosum or Basidiobolus ranarum (Basidiobolomycosis) · Conidiobolus coronatus/Conidiobolus incongruus (Conidiobolomycosis). i.e. a biosecurity breach which has now released a GM Zygomycota Organism into the wider environment?

Hmmm ... wasn't that how Swamp Thing, and maybe the Creature form the Black Lagoon came about? Talk about adding to the list of things to hamper your survival strategies. wink

Hmmmm, it's certainly no less possible than a earthquake/tsunami/nuclear reactor meltdown trifecta

Or perhaps the domino cause and effect is;

Earthquake > Tsunami > Nuclear Reactor Meltdown > Nuclear Fallout > Atmospheric ionisation > Electrical Storms and Tornados > Biological Release of GMOs > Dead people and dead earth worms > Crop Failure ...... frown

We've been doing volunteer work up in Joplin since the storm. It would be nice to know if any immediate, self-administered treatment beyond normal wound cleaning and disinfection is suggested.

What I've read so far indicates that the fungus can also be inhaled so some sort of masks would seem to offer a little (maybe very little) protection.

No need for any conspiracy or deep mystery. A tornadoes has high winds that have been known to cut furrows in the earth. Toss in drought parched soils and the fact that the soils are loaded with fungus spores and microbes and you have grand opportunity for mass exposure to infectious agents.

The second factor is the fact that stress reduces immune function. Stress like having narrowly survived. Stress like having half your town, friends and neighbors, blown away or crushed. Stress like sweating out your son or daughter being missing. Stress like not having a place to live, or a job. Add that to the mix and you have a lot of people who are going to be immune suppressed and vulnerable.

Combine a huge number of spores being airborne with large numbers of overstress and vulnerable people and you have a recipe for those spores to find a homes in and on humans. The same thing is often been seen in areas which experience earthquakes. A good shake and building falling raised a lot of dust. Dust which is loaded with fungus spores and microbes.

Agreed Art,

When buildings and Man made materials are left to the elements mold and fungus's grow rapid. A Single well used couch can become a instant farm in one night of rain. Same thing with anything absorbent in a house, Carpets Stuffed animals, Beds, Clothing so on so forth.
