Interesting twist on friction fire starting
Was watching Discovery Channel last night. The show was about mummification. I think based out of Africa somewhere.
Anyway….Saw a neat twist on fire by friction. Only saw the scene for 3 seconds but it looks like it boils down to this:
2 foot stick peeled and a shallow groove half way around the stick about 3 inches from one end. A coarse rope (looked to be braided grass) a couple of feet long. Tinder.
Place small rock on ground. Lean the tip of the stick on the rock so that the groove is towards the ground and about 1 inch off the ground. Hold stick in place by standing on it with one foot. Place a clump of tinder under the space below the groove. Thread the rope under the stick so that it fits into the groove. Hang on to both ends of the rope and see-saw- back and forth creating friction and smoldering sawdust that drops down onto the tinder. Pick up tinder and blow into a flame.
Looked really fast. Will have to try it out. I would guess like with anything type of wood and rope are critical. Suggestions?
