Is it broken? I'm trying to find the post that linked to the military's comparison test of water filters and it comes up "no results" even on a general inquiry like "water filters".

I have the same problem. If you put an * in front of your search term, it should work. A search for "water filters" should but entered as: "*water filters" (without the quotations of course).

Are you resetting the date range to "years?" The default is for threads within one week. I just tried a search for "water filter," with the date range set to the max of three years and got eight pages of result.

i just typed - with the quotes as shown - "water filter" - hit GO and got 8 pages.
