Recently got a couple of glowing tritium keychains. My wife thought it was silly that I would order a couple of $14 keychains, but when she saw them in the dark she immediatly confiscated one. Said it would be good for finding he keys in her dark purse.

Anyway, I just wanted one to play with. Couldn't leave well enough alone so I chucked it up in the drill press and turned it down to a bit over a 1/4" diameter, shortened it, re-polished it and drilled a new hole for the split ring. Much smaller now. The new and improved version is on the lanyard for my bed side flashlight. No feeling around in the dark for it now. Glowring is bright and easy to find. I'd highly recommend one on any emergency flashlight. After all, you usually need your flashlight when it's dark.

BTW, the green are the brightest and the easiest color for your eyes to register.

Can find the glowrings here:http://candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=68028

you drilled in to your glowring?!?! wow, thats a interesting risk your taking. The vial inside is pretty fragile. Although tritium is not extreamly hazardous, i can still remeber reading in millitary manuals to leave the space your in, when you have broken a tritium device and let a specialist team decontaminate the room...

i have been carring a glowring on my keychain for a few years now, really handy to find you keys with in the dark. And uh.. as far as i know, glowrings are not allowed to be sold in the US.

You're right about them not allowed in the U.S. The NRC considers the keyring to be a "frivolous purpose". But then, I'm one of those guys that hates the nanny state we're becoming. I bought it from a guy in Singapore. Gotta love the internet - an enemy to tyrants worldwide!

As for the safety of the vials, read this www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=107823
Just scroll down to the links from John N.

I just machined and drilled the polycarb around the glass vial. It's still a pretty substantial housing. Reduced it from a big honking piece of plastic to a smaller honking piece of plastic.
