I am looking for some reviews on survival mirrors. I have on that is similar to this one:http://www.countycomm.com/signalsmall.htm
I have carried it for a while and I like it, a little heavy but a good mirror.
I was looking online and found these:
http://www.bestglide.com/Star_Flash_Info.html
and
http://www.bestglide.com/maydaysignal_mirror_info.html
A few things I am looking for win this mirror:
1. Can use it to shave with
2. Sturdy
3. Compact
I have had some mirrors before that were a piece of polished metal or a piece of plastic with a shiny surface, and when you looked in it you looked like you were looking into a fun house mirror, or you were upside down. If anyone has had any experience with these mirrors I would appreciate your input.

I'm afraid that "survival mirror" & "shaving mirror" are a contradiction in terms. For signaling buy the Star Flash. For shaving buy something like the Coghlan's camping mirror. Weight of either of them is minimal & you can always use the shaving mirror to increase the surface area of your signal mirror.

i have a couple of 2x3 star flash mirrors and i'm very pleased with them. but i'm a little protective with them and wouldn't use them for shaving, etc. (but i'm anal like that) for that i bought a cheapo flexible REI mirror which can easily be cut into smaller pieces with scissors if need be. they're work great as a utility mirror. and since its very lightweight you won't even notice it.

I carried one of the mirrors similar to the REI one in my Kevlar during basic for checking the makeup (camoflage) and it was ok since it was all I had. My mirror would be used for hygiene, signalling, application of camoflage, etc. I don't think I need to carry several different mirrors to accomplish the task that one mirror can accomplish.

a plastic signal mirror is to prone to scratching for any other use than signalling. They will almost get scratch by just looking at them!

I carry a dirty cheap glass mirror in my cleaning kit, you know the onces you normally find in a womans purse. The plastic thingy it's mounted on seems to do a pretty good job at protecting it. I don't really shave, but i use it to check for ticks and stuff.

raider,

Sir, your 2"x3" glass signal mirror is the best possible mirror available. The Ritter PSP mirror is of equal quality and lighter but scratches easily. Put some Gaffers tape around the foam pouch to protect the pouch and mirror. Put a thin cord on the mirror and be happy! You can spend more money and get something of lesser utility but why? The plastic mirrors like the BCB and StarFlash use a reflector that is not much more reflective than aluminum foil. I bought both and gave them to my boys to play with. I have two of the Ritter PSP mirrors, they are excellent! I also bought everyone (6 people) in my family a 2"x3" glass signal mirror like the one you have.

Try this for yourself:
Take your glass 2"x3" mirror and any plastic mirrors you can get your hands on and reflect the sun on the side of a building. You will see that the glass mirror has a bright well defined reflection and the plastic mirrors have a scattered blur of light. Also the aimer in the center is superior to almost all other signal mirrors.

You have the best possible signal mirror in your hands and it will work great for shaving. <img src="/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

The Star Flash seems to work well, but mine cracked in my pack. The mirror is fine but the plastic case cracked around the edge. I haven't gotten it wet since then but the crack is definitely large enough to let water in. I'm not sure how effective it will be with condensation or dirty water inside of it. <img src="/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

I've been really impressed with the glass 2"x3" signal mirrors available via http://www.countycomm.com for $8 I also think the available case is well worth it for an extra $3.

I have a 2X3 glass mirror from REI (IIRC) that I pack in my shaving kit when traveling.

I would stay away from plastic mirrors for frequent/daily use. They scratch to easily.
