I have seen many post recommend the army ponchos and liners. I was wondering how a fleece sleeping bag that zips out to a blanket would compare to a poncho liner. Have any of you guys compared them in the field?

Thanks,

David Enoch

In my experience most of the fleece sleeping bags I have used are great summer weight sleeping bags or liners for heavier sleeping bags in colder weather. However, they are no replacement for a good poncho liner. I have a standard USGI poncho liner and it is much warmer and durable than a fleece sleeping bag, even without the zipper kit installed.

I used to head to the field with an ECWS mummy bag. In 20 degree weather, I slept with the bag unzipped and a poncho liner tucked in over me and slept well.

I still use it to cover our bags in cold weather.

That thing is a quarter inch thick piece of great insulation. it breathes well and doesn't collect moisture.

A poncho liner gives you the option of using it as a blanket (or roll) and/or for warmth should your need to be mobile in the cold rain. It can also be used as a ground clothpad; I vacuum encapsulated mine so it is not bulky.

I've had a hard time finding the proper fitting GI ponchos....any leads?
