I'd pass on the nightstar - I have one and it's mostly a novelty. Once fully charged, its output is about that of a photon 3 set on low. An inexpensive LED loaded with lithiums would be a better long-term-storage ready-in-an-emergency light.

I can't comment on the glowstick you posted, but I just bought a pretty decent pair or LED glowsticks for camping with my nephews at Walmart. I think they were $3.99 each.

If you still want a Nightstar, I'll sell you mine cheap.

I guess the effectiveness of the NightStar II depends on what you are using it for. I use mine all the time around the house and like it. The lower light level is even a plus when checking on sleeping children. On the other hand, it is not bright enough for illuminating something across the yard. In that regard it is about as effective as a flashlight with low batteries, so I'm in the same boat 50% of the time <img src="/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

A few more points... It is MUCH brighter the first minutes after charging it fully. There is a strong magnet in there -- I'm paranoid about keeping it away from camcorder tapes, etc. Lastly, the clear model is cool but you have to put up with glare from the flashlight body. I'd get a black one next time.

After doing some checking, I have come to the conclusion that my particular Nightstar may be weak or defective. I checked it against one belonging to a neighbor and one new one at a camping store. Both left mine lacking substantially.

So, much of what I said above is probably no good.

Dogplasma:

Try cleaning the contacts with some electronic contact cleaner and an unused piece of scotchbrite scouring cloth.

Be careful as some contact cleaners eat plastic. Although they cost more per ounce, the contact cleaners I have bought at Radio Shacks have all been safe for my uses.

Good luck!

I'll look into that, but I don't think it opens. WIth no need to change bulb or batteries, I think they sealed it.
