The Selous Scouts even had a cavalry unit. After trying, and destroying every known variety of saddle on long patrols, a famed saddlemaker examined a popular surplus import, the U.S. Cavalry McClelland! A modified version made up on fiberglass and wood trees, fitted with Cape Buffalo hide was produced and quickly found acceptance. A Texas rancher with a cattle operation in Zimbabwe briefly imported these to the US, his only way of taking goods or profit out of the country. I was one of a handfull who bought these "Ugliest saddles ever produced." It was so ugly, an Alaskan Packer paid me double the price.
