I think it might be helpful for this site to contain some reference for the many acronyms contained here in these forums. In light of recent events in California, I’m sure Equipped to Survive will be visited by many new people interested in becoming better prepared. Abbreviations like BOB’s, SAK’s, EDC’s, FAK’s, MRE’s etc. can be intimidating obstacles to learning the basics for a novice. It’s just a thought.

Hi,

There have been several threads regarding exactly this subject...go to the search function, type in the word "acronym" in the search box, select all threads, all dates and hit enter. It pops up with a whole world of info. regarding acronyms.

SAK= Swiss Army Knife ( multiple tool folding knife with a corkscrew) MT = multitool ( a really big stainless steel SAK without a corkscrew) FAK= first aid kit( bandaids) EDC= every day carry( stuff in our pockets) PSK= pocket/personal survival kit( stuff in our pockets, only in a neat candy or tobacco tin) BOB= bug out bag ( emergency gear if we have to leave our residence on short notice, contains half the stuff in my G/Fs purse) MRE= meals ready to eat( army guy food that replaced T.V. dinners for watching Burt Gummer) TEOTWAWKI = The end of the world as we know it ( I have a time share in Idaho, 5 years of freeze dried garbanzo beans and an endless supply of fire tinder in handy,Y2K remaindered books for sale ) ETS= Equipped to Survive ( award winning website of Doug Ritter, prone to log on headaches and random outbursts of self efacing humor.)

I too was at lost, when reading those BOB, IIRC and so on...

Someone pointed to this helpful site

www.acronymfinder.com/

where you can "translate" most of those acronyms.

In response to Chris' explanation...

Friendly Indian from the tribe of TEOTWAWKI told my friend BOB that he SAKs at climbing MT Multitool and should prepare more. Old Indian also told him about sightings of ET.S in the mountains but BOB wrote it of as ramblings of old man. When BOB hit the slopes he realized that he was screwed (FAKed) and tried to turn back. Unfortunately weather was bad and if it wasn't for help of MR.E and ED.C (fellow climbers) he would have naver made it home.

Now shoot me.

LOL!

Thanks for the chuckle, Matt.

That's definitely worth a ribbon.
