Just FYI, Brookdale has issued a "recall" for their EVAC-U8 smoke hood. It was apparently triggered by their or others stupid/opportunistic marketing the smoke hood as suitable for use as protection against tear gas or chemical warfare agents. According to a story in the Wall Street Journal, the company reportedly previously tested the masks years ago and determiend they worked, but recently retested the mask using stricter tests and discovered that it didn't really work effectively. <shrug> While the recall is only targeted at those who purchased the smoke hood for these purposes, the recall is so badly written that I expect this to be miss-reported widely in the general media. I think it is probably still a viable and affordable, if not the best performing, smoke hood for aviation or home/office use.

Recall notice: http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml02/02178.html
