The James Kim story has captivated me this week, but I tend to think that it just won't happen to me because I don't cut thru places like Oregon on vacation. However, If you combine an EMP blast with the cold weather (8 degrees in southern MO) that is currently over the middle of this country there would be thousands of Kim family tragedies occuring all at the same time. With no one coming to help any time soon. So I am in the process of putting together a 2nd BOB that is purely high calorie food. I won't haul it around with me locally, but any kind of trip that takes me more than 15 miles from where I live will include this large amount of food. What good is a little PSK or FAK going to get you in the dead of winter stuck on a road in the Midwest? It will come down to calories in the long run.

I like granola bars. A ten pack runs ~$2.50 and 1,000 calories. They're mostly freeze and melt proof.

I was carrying mres in the truck, but as they approached 5 years of age, i ate 'em. replaced them with a variety of dehydrated soups, mashed potatoes, pouched tuna and salmon-all from the supermarket, less expensive than mre's, more palatable, and, enriched with supermarket grated parmesan, the foods of choice of local mountain climbers. lightweight, compact, scalable servings (its hard to eat 1/2 of an mre entree and save the rest.
