Jeremy,Go to Doug's retailer list and key on Exploration Products up in Washington. They have excellent fishing kits and gill nets. The milspec kits are occassionaly up for auction on Ebay.I think you will be happier with the exploration kit.The military kits get pricey due to collectors. The explore unit has a better assembly .

Barry at bluelineoutfitters@hotmail.com was working on a fishing kit. Don't know if he ever completed it.

Serendipity! A fishing kit just arrived from Barry! It's a minimalist kit secured in his small plastic vial. There is a small skien of line, 6 small hooks, 3 swivels and 6 assorted weights. Add a few safety pins and a gaff hook to your PSk and your set. I'll have to test it for the fishing kit review. It looks good for it's size!

It may have been said in jest but I think this may be a serious topic for some of us who would have a hard time catching fish w/ a hand grenade.

- Exactly how effective is 10 yrds of line, a couple of bare hooks, and some split shot? -

The chance of me catching a fish in Long Island Sound with any of these kits would be slim. Unless I'm along a forgotten river where the fish are abundant and will bite anything I wouldn't want to bet my next meal on this kit.

My question is... Do I just need practice, patience, and skills or is there a more viable solution? Like a gill net or nearby pizza parlor? ;-)

Please remember where the minimalist fishing kit is, your PSK. the TRA-CON, WSI and Exploration units are very sophisticated assemblies. The minimalist kits are just a base with hard to fabricate items. Is your hook bare? Bait with flowers, fruit, insects, grubs. 30 ' of line inadequate? Of course! Use it to tie off your knots, sinkers, etc. This is your leader. That 15' of paracord has 6 inner strands. thats 90' of additional line. Yes, it can be done with skill , patience and a little luck. I will tell more in my fishing review once the salt water segment can be completed.

I agree, the monofilament is leader material only! I watched some of the Survivor Outback (I have not seen any since!) I was squirming when they were squandering their fishing line and hooks! Why use 10' of monofilament as a handline? Use 1' and twine as backing (from paracord or other). My altoids tin includes 20' 8 lb test, hooks, small weights and 30' of 30 lb test braided fishing line. This is similar in weight and strength to the paracord inner strands. For squirts and giggles, I used my altoids tin kit on a recent fishing outing. I exclusively used it's contents for fishing and water. I'm glad I pasked oven bags for water instead of condoms (the looks!). The single 1000mg vitamin C tab in my kit wrapped in generous Saran wrap came in handy. This made the iodine water much more palateable!

I also am in te long island sound area and,in a pinch, the only thing I could catch would be sea robins (not very tastey but edible).
I agree with Chris. These kits are designed to supply the unobtainable items. You must keep in mind that the items included in any PSK are supposed to be the basis for expounding upon and not everything you will ever need. More important than what equipment you carry is the knowledge you have.
-Don

Hi all
I include a couple of small sequins in my kit. I fly fish a lot and a sequin just above a hook eye has two advantages, it acts as an attractor especially red and silver, also it affects the movemnet of the hook through the water, really useful if you are retriving the hook/fly through water. Also a short piece of red thread, or even paracord can make a bare hook more attractive. Have a look in any fisherman's box (ooh err!) you'll be surprised just what does catch fish.

Good luck

pathos, from the UK.

Which direction is the sequin facing? Cupped side forward or domed side forward?

Thanks

cupped side forwars, so it catches the water forcing it around the edge, giving it a shuddery movement, if you had the convex side going forward it would be aerodynamic and you not get the same movement.
Hope it works for you.

Pathos

A few thougths about fishing kits: consider omitting the swivels. These are primarily used when using spinners or other lures (which, presumably, you won't have in your kit) that have tendency to twist line. You can use them to rig some cool drop weights and other things, but they are a luxury for even that.

Many kits have two "tests" of monofilament. One heavy and one light. Replace these with a braided or woven fishing line like Spiderwire. A 30 pound test length of this stuff has the same diameter as a 6 lb monofilament so you need only one.
Some may like to keep a little mono to use as a tippet (a little bit of clear line at the end so fish can't see it), but I've found that the subdued colors of Spiderwire didn't spook fish in crystal clear glacier fed streams. The line is so small that you can easily carry 20-30 yards of it and not have to cannabalize your para cord.

Better to have too small a hook than too big a hook. You can catch big fish with little hooks but the reverse is much harder.

Buy good hooks and test some of them with pliers so you will know how much strss they can take. You would not believe how some cheap hooks snap off or straighten out under light loads.

The sequin thing is a good idea. You can also include some strips of tinsel (like used to decorate X-mas trees). You can tie this to bare hooks and catch fish that are attracted by the flash.

Finally and most importantly, learn the knots that work best with the different lines you may have to cobble together. A knot that might work in para cord might cut right through spiderwire.
