I am looking for a watertight metal container to create a pocket sized survival kit. I have looked online and around town like crazy. I saw one guy's website had a metal container made by Olicamp but I have not been able to find a thing. Any suggestions on where to find? Thanks.

Some folks here on the forums have used a Trangia Mess Tin as a PSK container. There were some past posts and pictures of such a setup a year or more ago. I doubt they're watertight unless you seal where the lid and tin come together.

Here's a picture of the mess tin:

Metal tins are 'classic' containers by virtue of availablilty. Tobacco and candy tins are the usual resource. Few will be even remotely waterproof. A simple expedient is to secure the box with tape. This happily provides a redundant resource for repairs. Don't be afraid to 'think outside the box.' Round tins such as saddlesoap containers often have a threading vs hinge assembly. Round materials such as snarewire and pocket saws become easier to stow vs angular items in square units. Packing a PSK is an almost religous experience or right of passage anyway. Another overlooked step is to give a quick wipe down of the contents. Salty fingerprints have a nasty habit of initiating rust. To get started just pick up a tin of ALTOIDS. Think of this as your prototype. Eventually you will be ogling everything from aluminum cigar tubes to EBAY sterling silver snuff boxes.

I think you need to define "pocket sized" as that means a lot of different things to most people. I assume you want it thinner so it doesn't distort a pocket (even some cargo pockets can't take some thick mess kit style cases). Do some searches for cigarette / cigar cases as well as metal wallets. I've found some pretty interesting cases that way, though they are usually pricey. I've also seen some neat cases in electronics departments amazingly enough. Usually for hand held games or PDAs, etc. worth a shot to look there. Online you can search for metal cases for PDAs, cell phones, iPods, etc. I'm sure they make them in aluminum like my Rino case for my Axim PDA.

Anything taped up with black electrical tape is "water resistant" and not really water proof. Though it should hold it's own if you've carefully applied the tape and the surface was cleaned prior to application. You could make your own gaskets too or use teflon tape or silicone for a more ghetto approach.

I agree, you first have to determine what you mean by "pocket sized". I can understand your desire for a metal container..hard to boil water in plastic. I have used old Kodak film reel canisters, cleaned of course. Don't know what type of film was in them, but they were about 2 inches thick and about 4 inches across. A little large for pocket sized, but jacket pocket sure. You could cram an amazing amount of gear in there and they boiled water great. Happened to be at an advertising agency doing an odd job and they were throwing them out. I agree with Chris...it's a religious experience.

There is a good thread over on the British Blades forum http://www.britishblades.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15543
showing a BCB mini mess tin being used as a container. Haven't tried it myself yet but it sounds quite good <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I take monthly trips to candy shops and party supply stores and stroll down the isles looking for PSK cases. It's amazing how many different types of candies come in hard packaging made of plastic or tin.

As someone stated before, they're probably not going to be waterproof unless they store some kind of liquid high fructose kid fuel. LOL

Today, at the party supply store I picked up a neat pack of Invisible Cards because I wanted some waterproof cards for my BOB and when I saw these I loved the way they looked (I'm a sucker for cool and interesting graphic design). Unfortunately, the plastic case they came in would make an awesome PSK case as well and I may end up wanting to use it for that instead! LOL

I also check online candy stores, but most of the time they want you to buy in bulk.

Thanks for the great link. If one rolls down thru all the replies there are some additional pictures AND a link to a source.
These appear to be the perfect size, perfect material, etc for a pocket sized kit. I've been using a Trangia small mess tin (a little too large for pocket carry and not waterproof). I ordered two of these tins and look forward to a Zen evening assembling two new kits. Smashing!

I got one of those BCB boxes. It is not waterproof but I like it a lot. Here is my review of it: BCB tin review
