That indeed is a good example of an Altoids kit, but like all such assemblages, it has limitations. No map, and no water. Yes, it has a container for water, but that is only half the solution. I am showing my desert background, but in arid conditions you must have water, not just the container, on your person and immediately available. Anything short of that is delusional. As for the map; I would rather have a good, clear 24,000 scale topo map of the area than any of the stuff you could cram in an altoids tin. Nine times out of ten, the map will be far more useful.
I think the Altoids PSK works for people traveling by plane or helicopter, where one could be abruptly thrust into the wilderness, with only what is on the body available for survival. Even then, well chosen EDC items, like a small flashlight knife or multitool, can be very helpful supplements.
Basically, I like to expand the usual Altoids with a real canteen, some significant shelter items, clothing appropriate for the environment into which you might be thrust, and a reasonable quantity of food items. You can nearly always carry this on your person (the canteen is the biggest hassle), and the total weight should not exceed five pounds.
