I'm not into high tech electrical appliances like palm tops, gps, cell phones, altimeters etc, I prefer the traditional way. I have decided to make a edc notebook of rite in the rain paper. I already carry the notebook around, but I would like to have lots of information on survival techniques/ bushcraft recipies in it. Any suggestions for what I should include. I will also have my name, address and medical info at the front.
Cheers

A great start can be had from Willie's PSK Cheat sheet

I would follow that up with notes taken from the books in the ETS Lending library There is probably more from those two source than you would want to carry around in your shirt-pocket notepad. That is why many here carry the digital equivalent. There is simply WAY MORE data capacity in a PDA than a 3"X5" spiral-bound notebook. For example, in a decent sized PDA you could store the entire ETS lending library and still have room to add a few books and take notes. In your paper notebook you will fit the cheat sheet and perhaps another 10 pages of info and then reserve the rest of the paper for taking notes.

OTOH the info in your notebook will be accessable long after the batteries die, the screen cracks, the viewers become obsolete etc in the PDA.

I already have copys of willie's sheet in my PSK, wallet and other places. However I want to carry a lot more information that that, stuff that I will constantly add to. I have lots of good survival and outdoor books from which I am planning to take plenty of information.
Regarding the PDA, batteries fail. There are many things to go wrong with electronic appliances and constant viewing will run the batteries down. Notebooks can always be viewed. Another factor is my student budget. A PDA is not within it.
Thanks again for the reply.

HI Pete
My suggestion would be to think of the things that you don't know well enough because you haven't practised them... So personally I wouldn't bother with shelter bulding info but I'd probably want something about snares/traps etc. Similarly it might be useful to list what trees are best for friction fire lighting, and then some key tips in identifying those trees at different times of the year.

One thing I've found is that practising and studying bushcraft knowledge is important and great fun. Learning trees is a challenge but achievable, and helped by trying to put together information from a variety of sources.

Cheers
Justin

I also carry a small notebook that I keep adding stuff too.

Mine is really multi-purpose so I have a farily long list of emergency contact numbers, HAM radio frequencies, CERT member contact numbers and addresses, Inventory lists of my various kits, bus schedules, notes from various classes I have taken (CERT). It just keeps growing. I print mine out double sided in a 3x5" format, staple and stuff into my notebook. This way I can update at will and print on Rite-in-the-rain. I have included a few drawings of knots etc that might be useful.

<img src="images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />. Great mind think alike. Thats exactly what what I've been doing. I have 2 and a half pages of tinders, woods for friction firelighting and woods for boiling and roasting from Ray Mears bushcraft. Lots more to do.

Don't forget about Morse Code. It may be a bit outdated, but even a busted up radio can still transmit beeps! Also, your signal mirror and whistle can transmit it. Just a thought.

just fyi - in each fire truck we have a notebook - not a computer - with key info.
latops break, won't boot when you need them and are much slower than paper for maps.
