That's why you keep a master list of things to take. If you forget it this trip, add it to the list so you don't forget it again.
And he forgot the can opener.

I like to keep rite in the rain notepads in my gear, write down stuff I wish I had. Also, if I buy something while out because I needed it for a trip, if it CAN stay in the kit, it DOES stay in the kit.

I'm usually pretty tolerant of bugs, so I'm a bit lax about carrying bug spray. But we were going to go on a 7 mile hike in the BWCAW in MN recently, and got about half a mile in. The mosquitoes tried to pick up and carry us off to their lair. We decided to try again a different day, with bug spray.
Now I have a bottle of bug spray in the FAK in my car, plus a couple of bug repellent wipes in my man-purse.

While car camping, I almost invariably forget -- the folding chair. Not sure why that item, just that I always do! Previously forgotten: Tent poles! Ended up buying new tent because the old one was too heavy and was wearing out. I always keep the poles with the tent from now on. Socks! Ok, I forgot these once. But they were in my car. It was just went I was resorting a few things at the trail head itself that I accidentally left them in the vehicle. Toque! Just a couple of times but never in a really cold situation. They are cheap enough to replace in any case. 35mm Camera! But it's been a long time since I've done that since I've switched to a smaller digital camera. Reading glasses! A few years ago when I was just getting used to needing these things I neglected to take them on a couple of trips. I've never forgotten any of the "top 10" items on the list.

Being warm and buggy down here: Spare sunglasses, light but tight weave long-sleeve shirt and long pants, hat with a brim, head net, bug juice, sunscreen.
I have cut my insect repellent use my more than half by using a head net. Using the hat, shirt and pants cuts down on sunscreen use. If your near the water sunglasses are very important. A day in glare without them means a splitting head ache and eyes that feel like they are filled with sand.
Because nothing makes a trip more miserable than stomach and digestive issues: Pink bismuth tablets, Imodium, ginger tea.
I try to carry these cures in amounts over and above what FAK/medical kit has. They can save a trip. A large supply is light, cheap and can be given away to other groups.

My hunting partner forgot underwear on a 10 day remote moose hunting trip, we each donated him a pair but teased him steady, then about 5 years later he did it again! He will never live it down.
I forgot extra water on a hike recently and had to cut the day trip short because of it.

My teardrop trailer is permanently packed. Even fleece and long underwear are packed in there all summer.
The only thing I fear forgetting is half-and-half or coffee.
Or dog food.
Because morning coffee is essential. And you don't watch to suddenly switch a dog's food.
And that reminds me to go ahead and put the food packing list inside the cooler, ahead of our next trip.

Yeah, I forgot dug dope once. Never again, let me tell you. What is dug dope? This phrase only really appears on Google only twice. Once here, and once on a page showing it as gear.

No kidding. I always keep a sticky note on my camp gear that says "don't forget coffee and half-and-half!" Course, worse case scenario I could use the Folgers coffee singles and powdered creamer I keep in the kit, but it doesn't come close to the real stuff.

A couple years back on a clamming expedition in March, on the Oregon coast, I forgot my tentpoles. Remembered the tent, mind you...yeah, that's the kind of thing you only forget once.
However, while my buddies weathered in torrential rain, fighting to re-pitch their tents in heavy wind and keep leaks and ground flooding at bay, I rode the storm out in the cab of the truck. :O)

I think I have managed to forget every item at least once. I think the worst is when you are on a multiday hike and forget something at the second or third camp then have to backtrack for it.

We must be related. Many many years ago I went camping with my brother and was excited to show off my brand new tent. I got to the campsite and ... no poles. I had thought the bungee cords would last longer if they were stored assembled - separate from tent. Sigh. Now tents and poles are stored together. Then many years later my family headed out camping with a brand new (used) popup camper. It rained buckets that first night. Everything I was wearing was wet. Next morning the rain had stopped but I then realized I had no socks. Sigh.

This makes me think of the "Hudson Bay Start". This was where voyageurs setting off on a long expedition would make their first camp only a short distance from the settlement. That way they could use all there camp gear and be sure nothing was forgotten, if something was missing then it was just a short paddle to retrieve it. I first heard about this method on a Ray Mears video filmed in Northeastern Ontario on the Missinabi River; I worked in that area 8 years ago it is a long paddle/drive to Chapleau if you forgot something. The "Hudson Bay Start" is now used to discribe self-growth and business activities as seen here in this article. My main way to not forget gear is my folder of Master Lists, but I have in the past lost the folder and that always troubles me. Mike

Mike, keep the lists on the computer and printed out with the gear - and add things as you think of them (or forget)

Actually les courier du bois only made it a short distance on day one because they had been partying for the whole week before they left and hadn't left until late afternoon anyhow.
Maybe they were too full of dug dope.

A trick from arctic hunters in the dog sledge era: Get moving about 10 meters (30 feet), then stop and walk all over your camp to look for things forgotten. Of course, it is easier to spot those things dropped UNDER the sledge if you move the sledge first ...
Still good advice, even if the mode of transport has changed.
When leaving home I am most concerned about forgetting my boots or wind&waterproof jacket. It is so easy because you don't nescessarily use them you sit in the car (drive with comfortable shoes, without jacket). Those are two really indespenseable things... I can do without tent pegs (just make 'em from a branch or twig, no problem!) and a lot of other stuff - Hey, improvisation is fun, even if involuntarily! But without my boots or jacket I am really in the cold.... In my climate, the clothes you are wearing are crucial survival items.

Worse than forgetting something, which if you are lucky you only do once --
Continuing to drag around "anchors" just because you might need them, or because you have always carried them.
A friend of mine can not, will not, won't go camping without his cast iron frying pan. I think it weighs as much as 1/3 of my gear all by its lonesome, is awkward to pack, stays hot forever, and is a pain to clean. Yet time after time, he has to have this pan.
Another guy was carrying around this giant 5 D cell maglite. We were kidding him that if the airport beacon went out they could call him. That and if a bear ever attacked he could whack it senseless with his flashlight.
Oh, the one thing that I never ever forget - TP. One of the first things in, seldom taken out, often replaced. Leaves just don't cut it.

Talk about needing things. One camping trip, a kid brought a watermelon, 2 1# Dinty Moore cans, and 1 16oz pineapple can. For a 10 day trip. And he had acid reflux.
Needless to say, that first night we ate his watermelon, threw the dinty moore into bear boxes (provided at the campsite, and we were doing a loop) and he ate the pineapple. And then proceeded to get diarrhea through his, my brother's, and my TP supply.
NOT a happy camper in the morning, as I dragged him, still in his bag, out of his tent to scream his ear off.
BTW, he actually went home later that day, since he wasn't hacking the hike for a few reasons. His 'buddy' brought a new roll of TP back with him when he caught up to us. Nice 2-ply stuff.

I can't say I usually forget much when I go camping. But that's the result of spending the day before just making sure I have everything. And I always have a list when packing.
Most of my camping lately is done at my local offroad park, so I'm maybe 50' away from a vehicle and maybe 3 miles from a store if I do need anything. But my goal is to not have to run to the store and actually have all that I need.
It's been years since I actually camped out in the wild outdoors, but I'm preparing to get back into it soon.

I make a handwritten list on a 3x5 card, punch a hole in the corner of the card, and attach it to the pack, cooler, box the gear is supposed to go in. I started doing that a few years ago when all the hurricanes were hitting Florida. All I do is check the list for that particular pack to make sure everything is there. Also a firm believer in redundancy. Because the most needed tool usually gets shifted around and falls to the bottom of the pack. I also practice finding things in the dark. I HATE it when I have to use a flashlight in the tent at 3 A.M.

Excellent idea dchinell. I admit I am not very computer savvy, I will have to get my teenage kids to teach me how to scan something into the computer.
I have gear lists and weekly menu's going back to when I went on week long hunting trips as a teen. My gear is now much more expensive and higher quality, we eat far better, but I can guarantee that we do not have as much fun.

I've never written any camping equipment plan down (yet), but I would probably benefit from doing so...
What I do is that I make a mental checklist in my head: What do I need for sleeping? (Ground sheet, sleeping bag, tent, whatever...) Cooking? (Stove, pots, ...) Clothing? and so on and so forth. So far I've never forgotten anything important, but I could probably cut down a bit on the weight and bulk if I had the discipline to make a list.
As I said, I am most afraid of forgetting to bring my shoes and jacket. They are not part of my pack, and if the weather is nice on departure I won't be wearing them when I pack and drive the car. It is my perpetual remember-in-the-last-minute item.

Nope, it's right where I left it, on the kitchen table. Argh!

Had to laugh about a Master Camping List. My family rolls their eyes at the mention of my list.
It's in Excel I do seven types of camping (seven columns represent the camping "modes") I have over 400 items listed with a primary key number and then with an "x" in the appropriate columns for the type of camping I am doing. Select the entire worksheet, sort by column (camping mode), then catagory, then item. Select print area, BAM! The list for whatever camping I am doing be it family, alone, with adult friends, deer hunting, etc.
I love that list!

I love that list! SOOOO would you be willing to share your "family" category list?? LOL. I ALWAYS end up having to make at least one run (often 2-3) to the nearest super expensive "suckers that forget everything" camping/convenience store. LOL. I wish I was that organized, but I never seem to get around to it!!

You may be waiting awhile for that list as this thread is from Sept. 2009 and Michael has not posted on this forum since the day he mentioned the Excel spreadsheet.

Since I might forget my head if not attached I keep lists in a 3 ring binder, that way it’s easy to change things around, which after trial and error or seeing a better idea, I frequently do. I find a printed hard copy list just easier as it can go out to the garage, shed, horse trailer etc with me when I'm packing up. Most of my gear is stored either in bags or plastic bins and I usually keep a list of what in them attached to the bin or bag, much easier than rummaging around in a duffle, stuff sack or bin to see what I put there often months back.
I also keep a journal and jot either good ideas I see on the net or in person down, as well as supplies---that get used and need to be replenished, cleaned or repaired. The repaired category would be more for horse or dog gear that the saddle shop can fix or re-size as sewing a button on presents a challenge for me!

Not to worry! Ain't left the group yet! Just been busy.
I'll get round to sending that list out. It is quite a hoot to the rest of the family....even when they discover their every need is met.....

lists are a good start but i'm one of those vision orientated kind of people, which explains my photo and not writing hobby. unless i lay everything out and eyeball several times i don't trust myself..the shot is my canoeing day bag,it could almost be a BOB. Canoedogs, is that blue thing in the middle on the right a meat thermometer I see?

BacPac..Wow..i forgot about posting that! its a LL Bean fishing thermometer.the idea is you take the temp of the first fish you get and then lower a depth gauge thermometer gizmo,i have one,to get the depth the fish are at.old method but when your on the canoe path you don't want to haul fish finders.i do hear they are smaller these days. also it's used when fly fishing to check the water temp.my main use is just to see if it's really as cold as i think it is!!OMG 57 no wonder the tent is chilly tonight and of course i note temps in my trip log.the items on the white paper go in my shirt pockets.the plastic box with the red and green tape is the lunch crackers.the round box is fishing lures.the long thing next to the thermometer is a LED and i don't take that anymore,in fact i thought the boat/day bag was getting filled with too many odds and ends and some of those have gone into the possibles bag inside the pack and the water filter is carried in the packs side pouch. June 5th i'll be out for two weeks solo!!!! Cool trick! I'm going to steal it. Thanks!!

Canoedogs,
Well, my memory is not good enough to ensure that I collected every possible item to view.
I do it with a list. I look down the list and check off all the items I decide I need for the trip. During a trip, if I discover something that I needed but didn't bring I add it to the list so I won't be without it the next time.

I use EVERNOTE to store all my lists. You can install Evernote on your Laptop, Ipad, Android, PC whatever.. It syncs all your lists automatically and you have them no matter what device you have.
Just uh, make sure you don't forget your phone...

i've been packing for my June 5th solo canoe trip.behind me is the main pack with the tent and sleeping gear. what i have noticed, inspired by this this thread,is that i don't make out a list but do it by "eyeballing". with the stuff sack with the tenting gear packed i moved on to the clothing.by eye balling i mean that i set out each bit of clothing on the living room floor next to the stuff sack and ask myself if i have what i need based on past trips, one set of spare shirt and pants, four sets of soxs, the back up TP and matches, you know the normal camp stuff. i do the same with the food.it gets set out the same way.each dinner, breakfast and lunch spread out so i can see it and count it off before its broken up into thirds and put away.i break up the dinners that way so i'm not opening a big bag to the damp but just a few at a time even if each one is in it's own zip lock. maybe i'm just one of those people who has to visualize things to make sense of them but with everything, and i mean everything right down to the last Bic set out in front of me the prospect of forgetting is nil. and i should say in the process quite a bit is seen as overload and left home. I do it the same way, Canoedogs. I usually start 3 or 4 days before a trip, doing each group at a time, finishing them all and then packing it all up. I have a list too, but am not comfortable without the visual check.

Sometimes I'll jot down a more detailed inventory of what I need for the next trip, but most of the time I just run checklists in my head. "OK, so I go to sleep - what do I need? Toothbrush, toothpaste, sleeping bag, ground sheet, tent, clothing appropriate for the season". "OK, let's eat breakfast - what do we need? Cocking gear, fuel, oatmeal, spoon, bowl, COFFEE, ..."
Far from foolprof - but I've yet to forget something really important. Some minor stuff has been left behind, mostly additional nice-to-have comfort or play items that we intended to enjoy on that particular trip.
I've played with the idea of keeping more detailed inventory of everything on every trip but nah, it's too much hassle. I'll start on writing a checklist just to get the juices flowing and then do the rest in my head.
I reserve checklists for really important stuff that can't be done before the last minute. Such as "move frozen food from the freezer to the cooler" or "pack phone charger in the morning".

Pack "rooms".
What do I need for the house, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and closet (clothing).
I find doing one room at a time, with the items laid out on the floor, helps me to see any missing items.
Just a method that works for me.

Good idea...but. the top ten things get forgotten because they don't memory associate well.
I recommend lists and more lists...and then check your list against some published ones. And now that most phones can carry easy to see and use list making software...More fun

My system is pretty simple, since I rely on my camping gear as much as part of my disaster plan as for recreation.
Every time I return from camping I unpack everything, lay it all out, inventory what needs to be replaced, wash/clean/dry/repack things that need it, and then go out shopping the next day to restock. The camping gear has enough non-perishable food for 3 people for 72 hours, though I usually add and consume fresh foods for an actual camping trip. I even vacuum-seal 3 days worth of kibble for the dog (plus she has her own mini bug-out-bag).
The net result is that when pressed we can load-up the Jeep for a trip in less than 30 minutes, stop at the store to stock up on food, and be 100 miles away in 3 hours (traffic cooperating). Not just for an emergency, but for spontaneous camping excursions as well.
Hopefully I'll find time to start working on my micro-camper this year so packing for a trip will entail hitching-up the trailer and driving off.
