The three best multi-tools I have ever had are the Leatherman Wave, Leatherman Supertool (there is a new one with locking tools), and the Victorionox (Swiss Army) multi-tool. Out of the three of them I like the Wave the best, but its not as "heavy duty" as the others.

Leatherman WAVE, hands down - but that's because it suits me and I don't abuse it (much). It re-defined multi-tools for me. The bigger Leatherman Super Tool is sturdier but I don't find it as convenient FOR ME. The WAVE is not perfect, but it does what I want well enough.

Haven't fiddled with the new Gerbers - the previous ones raised too many nasty pinch-blisters on me - but the ability to swap plier jaws is interesting, and it looks like they don't pinch anymore. There were/are some features on the Gerbers that I liked <shrug> they're at least worth looking at if you can handle it and fiddle with it. I wouldn't buy a multi-tool I'd never used if it's on a card or in a blister pack - you gotta wrap your paws around it and see what it feels like.

Whatever you get, if you spend $50 or more on it, spend another $5 and get your name engraved on it at a Jeweler's. Helps folks remember to hand it back to you...

Yea, definately get your name engraved on it. It comes in very handy, especcially if your nice like me and tend to loan out your tools <img src="images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

I did a lot of research before I bought my multi tool. I read this page and several others before I finally decided on the Swisstool RS. It has the one feature that I liked the most, you can access all the implements without opening the pliers. I will say that it is heavy. I also had a problem with the tips of the screwdrivers bending, but I sent it back to the company and they replaced it free of charge. Victorinox is very good, they stand by their gear and this tool has stod up wot several bouts of abuse in the field and around the house doing honey do's.

This is all opionion, but I will say this. Leatherman is good, but Victorinox is better. Better locks, better blades, and my opinion again, better pliers. I have had some of the others, Gerber and leatherman, and I like some of the features, but I have carried swiss army for years nad thier multitools are much better.

The two draw backs are that they are heavy, about as heavy as the leatherman super tool, abd they are more expensive. But in the Marines, I have found that you get what you pay for, and skimpping on the price to save a few bucks wil cost you alot more later on.

Just my humble opinion, but you do have to decide for yourself what you like and what you are willing to spend.

I have a Wave. I bought it because the blade was accessable without opening the tool and becasue it had an attachment for 1/4" bits.

The problem I have is that I have not found a good way to carry the attachment/bits with the tool! If anyone knows of a good belt case that carries the tool plus the attachments I would be interested.

(The attachments come with a case but it is a cheap plastic POS!)

Gerber used to make a similar case to the one pcitured here:

Look around maybe you find one. I still have one from 5 years ago and it's doing great (I have the same setup that you do).
