Dear Sir,

A while back, I'd seen your photopoint album of your gear. Very impressive. What interested me most were the French survival ration tins that have apparently been sold. My 'net search came up empty, and I had no luck on finding you. But, surprise, now you're HERE!!

Do you still have a source for those tins? Are they able to be sealed watertight?

Any help is always appreciated, Thank you

Peanut

P.S. For all you lurkers, the tins and the rest of Bagheera's gear can be seen at http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=130364&a=1351641 You'll like it.

a prodigal scout, just trying to be prepared.

peanut, My source for tins is www.MajorSurplusNSurvival.com they have 6 Swedish hinged, aluminum tins @ $10 key on products, key on military surplus, key on ammo cans. They are on the small side, and I seal with tape. There were some German butter tins on the market, but I haven't tried these. Doug lists a fly fishing box that is expensive but superb. The japanese carry lunches in a self locking aluminum box with a divider. I haven't seen these marketed lately. If you buy tobacco tins, keep the tobacco. It is a wonderfull moth repellent for woolens. Just put in an open dish in the closet.Safer than mothballs! I have one tin for general gear, and one dedicated for medical supplies. The general box is wrapped in extra paracord and the med box has a peened and painted Red Cross. I figure the paracord will soon be utilized, and I want the meds box readilly identified in an emergency.Pocket tins and TRA-Con fishing kits are wonderfull, until you try grabbing one item in a hurry!

Barry Schuchart at Blue Line Outfitters has the "SAS" kit tins- these seem to be the larger tobacco tin size. I ordered a couple, and they seem fine- they do have a gasket.

If anyone is contemplating buying a Windmill lighter (they're popular with outdoorsfolk), it's worth noting that they come in a very nice tin of the smaller/Altoids size with no hinge. Identical in dimensions, they seem much sturdier than the Altoids tins, are finished in what looks like Aluminum (doesn't look like tin, nickel, zinc or chrome), and snap very securely and snugly closed- no gasket, though, so they'll have to be taped to be waterproof. Actually, mine snaps closed so securely, it seems like a gasket could be improvised if it's important.

I've located a few on Ebay, plus a fortuitous find of one metal and one plastic unit at a garage sale. There are none surplused out,so its either CAP or a G.I. 'souvenier'. They are on Ebay frequently under military survival, survival, fishing survival etc. The collectors are moving on these. I've paid as little as $10 for a complete but opened unit,to $25 for a sealed unit. If you can't locate one I should have a few extra here shortly. There were a few other companies;Florida FishingTackle made a plastic boxed set and New Horizons of Oakland County inc. made a metal boxed set. All seam to have common purchase items except for the type of line. The instructions are excellent and theres room for a few more hooks and sinkers. My ebay name is 'strangeronahorse' so if you see one give me a holler so we don't bid against each other! The exploration kits are excellent, but you have to buy a freshwater and saltwater set @ $ 22 and $25. Their container is less than desireable.

Edited by Chris Kavanaugh on 08/10/01 06:38 PM (server time).
