I currently have Tom Brown's wilderness survival guide and it is great, but I wanted to know some others that are good. Can anyone tell me which survival guides you think are good.
Thanks

Frank

Frank, Survival guides can be roughly divided into a few basic categories. Military texts cover escape and evasion. the 'primative movement' replicates older skills and there are inumerable regional volumes on desert, arboreal, marine climes. The only questionable guides are older texts with outdated medical advice ( cutter snakebite kits and rubbing frostbite with snow). Sometimes one author can effectively explain something or give a small insight others do not. reading several authors also gives a consensus on what works; but with the caveat of 'fossilized facts' in the literature ( improperly illustrated snares and deadfalls are legion). Doug has a good list. I personally enjoyed Mors Kochanski's Bushcraft and David Alloway's book on desert survival.

I highly recommend the SAS Survival Guide. I have two of the GEM editions (the small ones). I've learned a lot from this book. I keep one in my ruck, and the other on my bookshelf for frequent reading. For about $10 each at Amazon.com, you can't go wrong.

John McIntire

I second that (recommendation for the SAS Survival Guide). The GEM edition will fit into the pocket of a dress shirt, so there's no reason ever to not have it on you, and yet they're about the cheapest books on the market. I have two of them myself.

I received my gem guide yesterday and I really like it I would recommend this guide for anyone who needs a guide that is small in size but very good.
