Zulu hide tanning technique - 02/15/07 02:04 PM

This is something I learned from my dad. Certain PC people may have a problem with it but it certianly is effective.

Tools needed:
3/4" wood dowel (4-5 needed)
stream/river/creek with moving water
old style metal tennis ball can
2 cups gasoline
three boys ages 9-12

Collecting the hide:
Set up the tennis ball can on the edge of the stream and pour in the gasoline. Step back twenty paces and then begin firing the roman candle at the can. The goal is to knock over the can, ignite the gas, and then jump around like maniacs as the burning gas floats down the river. At this point dad shows up, clamps hand around neck and makes large roaring noises with accompying flying spittle. Brings son home.

Tanning the hide:
Dad drags son to garage, grabs dowel and states, "Son, that stunt was a Zulu."
"Alpha!" *thwack*
"Bravo!" *thwack*
"Charlie!" *thwack*
*
*
*
"Zulu!" *thwack*

By now hide is thoroughly tanned.

Like I said, this technique is only for the most extreme survival situations. VERY effective though.

Wish I was. Dad broke five dowels that time. <img src="/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> Still, I'd have to say I deserved it. It probably saved our house later on when he got heavy into handloading. *sigh* Cans and cans of smokeless powder, but I never snagged more than a few grams at a time...

That's hilarious.

My mom used the Texas Hide Tanning technique. Same principle but with a switch cut off of one of the peach trees.

It was a weeping willow in my case. It kinda sucks to have to pick out your own switch.
