Recommendations - luxury camp mattress?

Recommendations - luxury camp mattress? - 05/07/14 08:41 PM

Hey folks, my comfy old air mattress has blown a gasket. I'm looking for a new uber-luxury camping mattress. Weight is not an object, but it has to shrink down into a sleeping bag size for transport. This is not for on-my-back wilderness work; it will be schlepped around in a car or canoe.

I will pay good money for something that is "hotel comfortable" and will last for 10 years. No wally-world rubbish need apply.

I've been happy with this for eight years:

Thanks! Looks like a nice one. Glad to know it holds up over time.

I've been using an REI Camp Bed 3.5 for car camping for a couple years now. It is definitely not light, but it's ridiculously comfortable. I think it's more comfortable than my normal bed.

We have used Thermarest for many years, a dozen plus, so no experience of current products but they have been excellent.

Worn well and so comfortable, packs well, good value. Get the thickest, widest and longest you may, you won't be disappointed.

I bring an Aero Bed and an inverter to power it's inflation.

My son and his wife have been using the Thermarest Base Camp for a while. They seem even more comfortable than the lighter one I use. They also have others (look at the MondoKing, 4 " thick) at:

I appreciate the replies. Nothing trumps field experience.

My experience with the Thermarest line over the last 20+ years has been stellar. With reasonable care they just keep going. The Neo and Mondo lines are on my short list.

I'll poke around in a few outdoor shops and see if the rubberized cotton air mattresses are still available. Or (being naturally contrary) I may try a patch on my existing one, if only on principle.

But it's not about dollars per se. A good sleep is the best medicine, and worth every last penny.

Thanks again for your help!

I'd say that exped downmat is absolutely "hotel comfortable", but I would never expect them to last 10 years unless you're _*really*_ careful... but that goes more or less for anything inflatable.

Canoeing is rarely entertained mid-winter, so I guess paying dearly for high-end mid-winter expedition equipment is probably not really what you're looking for.
