Hello and a question about Ka-Bar... - 05/18/02 02:11 AM

Hello to all! Although i've been a patron of the site and forums for a while now, I just joined today. I have to admit, I've learned more from this forum than about 25 sites combined. I think this is a great way to communicate with each other and share ideas.

Anyway, I have a question about a knife I recently purchased (unused) from a friend, a Ka-Bar Next Generation Tanto. Are these knives quality (quality for survival purposes) and what if any are the differences and dis/advantages of a tanto point. Personally, I love the knife, its very strong and it has a special coating to prevent damage from sea water and other elements.

Thank you!

John McIntire

Tanto points are for penetration. A drop point with a good belly ( the forward curve) is desireable for skinning and other tasks. The tanto is usefull for drilling holes. Your K-bar isn't the best choice, but it certainly isn't the worst. It's a decent knife. You like it and thats what counts. Get to know it, play with it, and if you find any shortcomings buy it a friend ;O) Welcome to the forum.

John I have the black 8" Kabar...it's fine for making sushi (which I use it for) but I am inexperienced with blades and find it unwieldy...I am going to get a 5" clip point for survival purposes.
