a lot of people seem to have foil in their psk's, but how do you pack it in?
do you fold it? thats what I did but then one time when I did use some foil I had that had been folded up in a my pocket I found it had a lot of holes along the creases.
have others had this problem? can you pack it in a way so this doesn't happen? -james

The holes appear from wear not folding. The edges (where it is folded) get the most wear. The solution that I use is to fold it around the altoid tin and then layer Paracord and ranger bands over that. The ranger bands take the wear and make it stick in place in my pocket.

Hi James,

The secret to folding so as to not create a lot of pressure at the fold corners is to fold your foil like a road map rather than a tarp. Meaning, folds that are zig-zag shaped or fan shaped put less pressure on each fold. folding the foil over and over onto itself, on the other hand, tend to bunch the foil up at the corners and will eventually split the metal. It is had to describe the difference but just look carefully at how a road map is folded and you will see what I mean.

David Koelzer

James,
I think the reason you had problems with the aluminum foil getting holes at the creases was that you carried it in your pocket rather than in a tin. One of the reasons to carry your gear in a tin is to protect it. Likewise, condoms carried in wallets flatten when subjected to crushing pressure and end up creasing. This weakens them and makes them more likely to break. In a metal or plastic tin of sufficient strength to hold it's shape and protect the contents from abrasion, foil and anything else should be fine. Just make sure to pack the contents with tinder to keep items from sliding around inside.

i know this probably sounds stupid, but using a quality and heavy duty foil makes a big difference. i've never done it but you can always use a small piece of foil and make a envelope
to take any abuse encountered.
