What's your sharps?

Between Bladeforums questions and a lot of questions here relating to knives I thought it would be a good idea to have a "Post your Sharps" thread where one can get an idea of the knives and tools we carry outdoors and why.

Here is my sharps selection:



1. The main blade is the Benchmade Nimravus Cub carried horizontally on my back or side.
2. The Gerber Backpax handles my chopping, crushing, chipping, hammering.
3. The One handed Trekker (non-serrated) is my backup. It stays in my pack, but makes an excellent outdoor knife as the grip is solid, it locks, it has a long saw, an awl, and a longer philips screwdriver (lacking in the charge).
4. The soldier is my loan out. If someone needs a knife or needs to cut something that is the knife I give them. If they take it or break it i'm out $25.00, which is a lot better then breaking my $65 Charge (which I could never find again for that price) or $120.00 Cub I also keep that in my pocket so if something happens to my pack and belt I still have something.
5. The Charge is my multi-tool and main folding blade. Excellent outdoor multitool.
6. The Swiss Card light I wouldn't want to rely on, but it is nice to know I have a light, knife, magnifying glass (fire), and a pin (improvised basic compass) all in one package, again kept deep in my pocket in case something happens to my pack and belt.

If I need something extra I have a Machete and Sawvivor, but I rarely pack those unless i'm going on extended trips.

I've gone to the RSK and Squirt as EDC.

1. Fallkniven F1, it's my primairy "survival" knife. It's the knife i carry wenn i really need a knife i can depend on. Got 2 sheaths for it, one is a dangler so i can carry it on my belt with my backpack on.
2. Alan blade packpal, it's my showoff knife. looks cool in front of other bushcrafting people. It also performs very well on most things.
3.Mora's, got 3 diffrent models, one is my most used outdoor knife, it performs very well and is replacible. The other 2 don't see much use, they where a gift and i like to worn out the other mora first.
4. mora crooked knife, nice for carving things wenn i'm bored, waiting for my water to boil or whatever.
5. Victorinox huntsmen, it's my EDC knife, but is also carried in the field for many diffrent tasks.
6. Victorinox Swisstool X, carried to repair things and as a pot holder, but is a bit replaced by my huntsmen.
7.Wenger exsecutive, on my keychain to do my nails...
8.Swisscard, at the moment primairily for the pen, not much other use that i don't already have with me.
9.opinel #8, for carving and other jobs the needs a sharp knife. Also non threathing, so can be carried more often.
10. GB wildlife hatchet, for making small campfire's and speed up carving things...
11. HB acdor hatchet, same use as the GB, but lighter and smaller.
12. bacho laplander saw, to saw everything up to a reasonable branch.
13. unbelievible saw, to saw things my other saw can't manage.

there are proberbly loads of other sharp stuff i own i forgot to mension, but it's these i use the most. i don't carry them all at once. I choice for the best tools for the trip.

Which sheath do you like for your F1?

While my Becker is a nice strong knife, I find it just to beefy (thick) for everyday use. I've been thiking of getting an F1.

I hear that the company has been sold and there is some concern that the knives may change soon.

only the ones that go outdoors or all of our sharps ?!??

Fallkniven is still currently for sale. Peter Hjortberger has suffered two major heart attacks and must retire. If no buyer appears they will simply exaust current stocks at standard prices. So I'm buying my weekly lottery tickets <img src="/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> The F1 has a very robust convex/Moran edge. I like it, but you may want to handle one first. I have the Kydex sheath and open dangler in leather.There is a third closed flap leather sheath. All are fine systems. I like the kydex for storing the knife in a kit and humid conditions hostile to leather. The open dangler is a nice update on the scandinavian sheath and my favourite carry for local use.

I guess the ones you use and carry.

Way too many to list! These days on outdoor trips I carry my old SAK Farmer model, a Grohmann #3 fixed blade with overlap sheath. For other cutting chores, if necessary, I use a Granfors small forest axe and a Sandvik folding saw, about the same as the Fiskars. I always keep a GI entrenching tool in the SUV, never leaves the vehicle. I also carry a SAK Rambler everywhere, every day, except to the shower:) Great subject, knives, too bad they are becoming so difficult to carry due to security worries! I don't think I went anywhere as a kid without a scout knife, now they throw you out of school if they find one on you! Sad world we live in today! You cannot even travel on an airliner with a P-38! I have carried the same one since 1966 and would rather drive than fly if I have to sacrafice my P-38! Cheers!

In the top right corner are a Leatherman Wave and a Benchmade AFCK (806 D2). This is what I EDC most of the time.

Next, I have my Cold Steel Trail Hawk. This is known as my: "Bear Be Cool Tool". I bought this last summer when I worked as a Ranger at Philmont. Sheath knives were not allowed, so I ordered this puppy off the internet. Its suprisingly light. I only carry this in places where fixed blade knives are frowned upon or if I don't want to abuse my sheath knives.

Next up are a Cold Steel Trailmaster and SRK. The Trailmaster (top) is for when weight is not an issue (car camping or heavy-weighted backpacking.) The SRK is my pick for when I'm doing lightweight backpacking. Both have wrist lanyards. The SRK has a Concealex Sheath, while the Trailmaster is smooth leather.

On the bottom left is a Victorinox Huntsman. This is sometimes carried by itself in urban areas or wherever there are 'jumpy' folks who get scared by knives. It is also a loaner knife. There's no way I'm loaning out my Benchmade AFCK.

Residing in the right bottom corner are my Leatherman Juice CS 4 (I got a replacement) and a Benchmade Mini-Pika. The Juice is used in urban areas (although sometimes it comes with me when lightweight backpacking). The Mini-Pika was purchased a few months ago and has treated me well. Its 440 C steel and is good for when I don't want to use my AFCK. These two knives/tools are combined for my "University" EDC.

I was looking around on the internet for information on the SOG Field Knife. Their web site no longer lists it. I wonder if it has been discontinued??

I've been looking for a "good fixed blade general camp knife - not a chopper - more of a good 4-4" kitchen knife with a sheath. I've was looking for a lower-priced S30V fixed blade knife (<$100).

Right now it looks like the only S30V choices are the SOG Field Knife and the Alaskan series from Cabelas (probably the Buck Vanguard).

I already have a Mora #22 w/ a carbon blade. I'll probably just stick with that.

Chris Reeve Shadow III in A2 w/ Firemaking equipment and a small LED and compass in the handle - Never step foot off the pavement without it.

Chris Reeve Large Classic Sebenza in S30V - Main EDC knife and I never leave the house without it (though a new job will be changing that beginning this August <img src="/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />).

HideAwayKnife with Recurve by Ken Brock in S30V - This is a new knife but so far it has been with me 24/7 ... even in the shower. Beginning this August this will most likely be my only EDC due to forces beyond my control).

Kershaw Ken Onion Leek in 440A - Lives in my PSK which lives in my truck.

OK, I won't mentioned the ones in the showcase of my library, but only the ones that get (or got) to see fresh air every day or from time to time ...
Here we go ….




A) Being an urban dweller, I mostly EDC the following « sharps » :
- n° 3 : Doug’s RSK
- n° 4 : a Mongin’s gentleman folder, perfect for slicing an apple in front of sheeples. And the corkscrew saved many days...
- n° 5 : when challenged for having a knife, I often come back the next day with this cute little Mongin (with a black damas blade - blade length 3,6 cm or 1.4 inches) and ask the « offended » party if this knife is more appropriate, according to him/her ….
- whenever a « saucisson » party is planned - or any such event where a personal knife will be helpfull for eating, slicing bread or cake, a.s.o. - I usually take one of my « Le Thiers » design knives, either n° 8 (damas blade, ivory scales) or n° 9 (inox blade, wood scales), both custom made.
- A few years back, I used to EDC this Spyderco folding knife (n° 1) and this during many years, before replacing it by the following one
- Before buying Doug’s RSK, I had in my right back pant pocket this Emerson mini- CQC 7B (n° 2), with the wave feature (I like that feature ! !). But the half serated tanto blade didn’t suit me. I would really like to buy a mini-CQC 7A without serrations, but with wave system…. Any one wishes to swap knives ? ? ?
- When travelling long distances with my car (at night, highway’s rest places are not terribly secured…), I like to have a necklace, such as this Fred Perrin’s « griffe » (n° 10)
- For air travel (pre-9/11), I bought this other griffe, in G10 (n° 11). Nowadays, I just forget knives, when air travel is involved.
- Same reason why I no longer EDC this Spyderco card (n° 6) in my wallet … too easy to forget it in there ….
- Let’s not forget n° 7, my trusty Leatherman, an other EDC item ; usefull at work ; also a PHRASECENSOREDPOSTERSHOULDKNOWBETTER.-friendly blade, when opening my RSK may be frowned upon.



B) When hiking, I sure take the RSK along.
- A small Leatherman Juice is in a pocket (ooopss… I forgot to put it in the picture), for its corkscrew and pliers.
- If a fixed knife is possible, I like to take along the first custom knife I bought from a young french knife maker (Pascal Martin), n° 2, in order to give it some fresh air. Sure, it’s not a work horse, but its blade is quite strong and could stand some abuse. Anyway, it is too nice to abuse, so I only use it to cut bread and cheese.
- Another one missing on this picture is a small Outdoor Wedge I, attached to the left shoulder strap of my backpack. One handed, easy access, very sharp.
- In a pant pocket, out of view, is an Emerson’s Commander (n° 1, with wave feature, for sure). Just take it out of the pocket and you instantly have an opened, impressive blade in your hand. Not meant for cooking …

And should I also mentioned the sharps in my car ?
- a Pocket-Rescue-Tool PRT I, made by Eickhorn
- an Szabo’s kerambit, stashed out of view…

Frenchy, nice collection of blades. I find the one by Pascal Martin to be very nice.

AFAIK, no...
I met him a few years ago and spent a week with him : he showed/helped me to make my own knife, from the iron piece to the finished knife (not the one on this picture).
Memorable week....
But, hélas, I have not heard from him since a long time.

here is the knife I made under Pascal's supervision : to be honest, let's say he made most of the work. I gave myself a good sweat, hammering on a piece of heated iron, then scratched my fingers trying to do something usefull, finally succeded to make the wooden scales...

Very impressive work. Whether that is your first attempt or not, very nice.

Since I have a limited budget and firearms take priority, I've a rather limited collection...

But my current setup is

EDC - Benchmade 550 Griptilian - great knife. Right size. Will replace with same.

Truck knife - BKT Combat Utility - Crewman will be my next purchase. Great value.

In Altoids Kit - Schrade SS1, will replace with a Gerber Ridge or CRKT K.I.S.S.

Bedside Table (Next to what goes BANG!) knife - Parkers Brothers, 6" clip point blade, one piece (similar in design to the Chris Reves knives, though, I'm sure, not as high quality), fighting/survival knife. Got it 12 years ago at a surplus store. Very solid.

CRKT Stiff K.I.S.S. Tanto blade - lightweight, spare for which I am contemplating it's place.

For collection, 10 or 12 Case brand pocket knives of different varieties.

Well, it would take up too much space to list the whole collection, but the ones currently on my person (as in this very moment) are a Benchmade 100 River & Rescue and a Gerber Air Frame. Within arm's reach are a Gransfors Mini Belt Hatchet, Benchmade 192 Bird & Trout, and Gerber Pro-Guide series Caper and Drop Point. Across the room is mouch of the rest of my collection. In my car at the moment are a Benchmade 190 Drop Point Hunter and my Leatherman Wave.

Yes, it's true, I have many sharp objects about my house.

My main EDC blade was a Victorinox Rambler.

I recently switched to a Sebertool M4. I like having the pliers and wire-cutters, and the fact that all the tools lock. However, it is about 50% heavier and not especially well-made/designed, and I am finding I miss the Rambler's scissors. A few days ago I started carrying the Rambler as well (in a different pocket). I recently upgraded my EDC and I think I am now carrying too much, so I may end up dropping the M4 altogether.

I have a bit of hacksaw blade on my EDC keyring.

Welcome to the list. Hope you enjoy the learning and communication. (And please do use mixed case when you post. It really is easier to read.)

You've listed an impressive array of blades in your EDC, but this list is about so much more than blades. So for us EDC means survival gear (which includes knives). Do you carry any survival stuff every day?

For example, I carry an augmented AMK Pocket Medic in one pocket, and an augmented AMK PSP (Doug's survival kit) in the other.

In addition to this, I carry a handkerchief, bandanna, Benchmade Griptilian or Spyderco Native, SAK Trailmaster, and have six feet of paracord in each of my shoes instead of shoelaces.

I classify survival gear into these seven groups:

Medical
Shelter
Fire
Signals (including navigation)
Water
Food
Tools

I think I have pretty good coverage of all these areas in my EDC with the exception of shelter and food. I should probably find some way to sneak a disposable poncho or trash bag in. Food isn't such a concern, as my EDC PSK is only intended to support me for 72 hours.

There is a director's cut out on DVD if that's what you mean by "remastered". A friend has it. I borrowed it and there are quite a few deleted scenes restored. Made the movie make a lot more sense. Great film.

PS About Bladerunner, every version I've ever seen has a constant 1-pixel shift going on for some reason. So the picture moves through three micro-positions every second or so. It's not noticeable on a large screen, but on a computer monitor it's pretty distracting once you notice it. That's what I'm hoping they'll remaster out.

As Frenchy pointed out this was just a list of my EDC sharps. The rest of my EDC gear is a much longer list which is for another post. Sorry about the all caps but It takes forever for me to type with mixed case and when I'm talking about survival gear and such I get excited and want to get all of my ideas down in a hurry. I know it's considered shouting but when it's something I'm passionate about, sometimes I do shout.
