Ray,

Thanks for the link. I have looked at their web page several times. I guess I am looking more for details or even advice from "do it yourselfers". I wanted to share this pretty good example of a shelter that one man built. There was a special on Discovery about it. web page
Pretty nice work, makes me feel like getting away from the computer and doing something with my hands besides typing.

Thanks for the info.

rocky mountain survival group has links and references for everything you could want in terms of long term survival and preparations from solar to shelters. Huge site. Many good links and some busted ones. Let them know of the busted ones. Also check out the Ark II

I recommend these books: Nuclear War Survival Skills by Cresson Kearny, How To Implement A High Security Shelter In The Home by Joel Skousen, and Principles Of Protection by Walton McCarthy. Tons of info whether you DIY or contract it out.

Very impressive. Even the bucket collection was noteworthy.

I don't really know too much about building underground shelters, while it is interesting to me it doesn't have a practical application down here in Florida. If you find a place that is not old swamp land (very high water table) you have to run dehumidifiers year round to keep the humid air from turning a earth cooled concrete room into a mold and mildew farm.

This might be kind of what you are looking for, Fema has a list of "safe rooms", including the tornado shelter developed by Texas Tech. I think it can withstand 300 mph hits from telephone poles, or something like that.
