Ritter Kit Duct Tape

Ritter Kit Duct Tape - 12/19/07 06:34 PM

Does anyone know where I can go to replace the small roll of duct tape that comes with the Ritter kit? I was on the first day of a 4-day backpacking trip when my buddy's boot soles blew out and I had to tape it together with the duct tape. It really saved the trip. I would like to replace it instead of carrying a fat role of tape.

Roll Your Own. Just put a pencil, pen, dowel rod, etc in a drill or electric screwdriver. Turn in on slowly and roll the size you want.

For small packs of duck tape, I have used old credit cards. Just wrap the tape around small side as many times a you want. The fit is perfect and it is relatively flat depending on how much you use. Best idea I ever had, although i might have seen it on here as well.

I used a large size ladies bobbypin (looks a little like a long cotter pin). I used wire cutters to shorten it to the length I wanted and used needlenose pliers to shape the loop on the end so it was symmetric. Roll the amount of tape you want on it, I did it by hand, not with a drill, knowing my ineptitude could easily end up with me mummifying myself otherwise! When you're done you have a metal loop sticking out the end that you can use as an attachment point for your keyring, etc. You could also use a long skinny eyebolt from the hardware store in place of the bobbypin.

I like the cotter pin idea

Try:

Travel-Duct-Tape---2-Rolls

I have seen other companies sell the 2 pack as well.

What a great idea. I saw the credit card option in an issue of "American Hunter" back in the '90s. When you consider how may "dummy" credit cards are sent to your house every year you can make a boatload of them.

Small (1/8") clear tubing makes a good center. You can get it at any hardware store. At the start I put a toothpick in the tubing to keep it straight. When you're done rolling just cut off the excess.

Coghlans makes flatpack duct tape. I'm pretty sure you can get the tape from AMK as a replacement part as it also comes in other kits they make.

Rolling your own is good too. I do it with medical tape for my pocket first aid kit.

Does it lose any of its stickiness if re-wrapped?

I like a pencil to roll the tape around. It can be used for writing, tinder, and whatever else you can think of.

You can flat pack the tape using nothing but the tape. Just pick the size you want and tape it back onto itself and start wrapping. It's a little clumsy towards the end, but for those gram counters out there you can't beat the weight savings.

Re: Ritter Kit Duct Tape - 12/20/07 04:25 AM

I make mine about 6 inches long. Roughly the length of a dollar. That way it fits nicely in the bill compartment of a wallet. I start with a piece of waxed paper 3 X 6 inches then wrap untill it reaches the desired thickness. The waxed paper keeps the first twowraps from sticking glue to glue. That way that much tape is not wasted. Because the glue to glue bond is such that is almost impossable to seperate the two. Besides even if you can what you have left would be almost worthless for its intended use.

Hey MEM,
I use 1/4" dowel rod, cut to the width of the tape. Roll it on by hand. It's slow but accurate because you can adjust it as you roll. It's relaxing and, after you replace your "Ritter" roll, you can roll some larger ones for the BOBs and other kits.

"Does it lose any of its stickiness if re-wrapped?"

No, it's perfectly good. I keep several credit cards wrapped with it in my cars (including my work vehicle), and it's just like it came off the original roll. Since all my duct tape seems to collect dog hair for some reason blush, before I put it into a tool kit or something, I wrap it with cooking parchment paper*, write "Duct Tape" on the outside with a felt-tip marker and wrap a rubber band around it.

*Cooking parchment is like paper teflon -- not much will stick to it, and you can use it for tinder, too.

They're a little larger than what's in the Ritter kit, but you can remove some until you hit the right size.

Using a drinking straw as a center for wrapping and then trimming it close works well when done!! Very light and compact roll sized to your needs!!

IIRC, I saw on a sight somewhere...REI or something similar a 3 pack of AMK duct tape rolls...from the company that packages the PSP...to me the small cost of that is well worth the time it would take to roll my own...but maybe that's just me grin

Ors, you can always roll some duct tape onto something while you're watching TV. There's not much on TV that requires much concentration. No shipping costs.

All of the methods listed are great and I have used them all.

You just have to experiment with them and find what works best for you in different situations.

I know I've got duct tape stashed all over the place, because you never know when you might need it.

You can wrap it around an old pill bottle then fill it with needles, thread, dental floss, and saftey pins to make a small repair kit that takes up next to no room in your kit.

Easier to buy the stuff lifeview refers to. I've got big rolls at home and in the truck toolbox but the little stuff in the packs. Life's too short to waste your time rolling duct tape onto straws... wink

Maybe just check out how they make it for the Ritter Kit. Get yourself a dewalt drill and there you go.

I just roll duct tape around my hiking stick, right up next to the handle. Always handy.
